Nutrition

  1. Formulated Diets (Pelleted / Extruded)
    • These are generally considered the best foundation of a healthy diet for most pet parrots and many other companion birds. Well-manufactured pellets are formulated to provide essential vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and balanced nutrients in proportions that seed-only or seed-heavy diets often lack.
    • When birds consume diets with ~ 75% formulated diet + ~25% fresh produce (by fresh weight), many studies show that most nutrient requirements (calcium, protein, many micronutrients) are met, and imbalances seen in seed-only diets are minimized.
  2. Fresh Fruits, Vegetables, Whole Grains & Protein Supplements
    • Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, etc., are necessary for micronutrients (vitamins, antioxidants) and for variety and enrichment. They should complement, not replace, the pelleted base.
    • Choose produce that is low in sugar, low in energy density, high in fiber for everyday feeding. Avoid letting high-sugar fruits sit out long, which can lead to fermentation or spoilage.
  3. Seeds & Nuts
    • These should be used more as treats or enrichment, not main course. Many bird species will selectively eat seeds & oils, which are high in fat, leading to overweight and nutritional imbalances (low calcium, poor calcium:phosphorus ratios, etc.).
    • Small quantities are acceptable; some seed or nut daily or every few days is fine, depending on species size, activity level, and health. But they must be weighed into overall diet so they don’t overtake the healthy portion.
  4. Toxins / Foods to Avoid

    In addition to your list (chocolate, caffeine, alcohol, avocado, onions, etc.), current research also reinforces avoiding:
    • High salt, high fat, high sugar processed human foods.
    • Foods with pesticide residue; wash produce well; consider organic where feasible.
    • Some food items with potential anti-nutritional factors unless properly prepared (e.g. raw beans, raw legumes which might have lectins, etc.).
  5. Transitioning Diets
    • Gradual transition over many days or weeks is best. Birds can be highly neophobic (fearful of new foods) or very selective.
    • Offer the new diet items (pellets, produce) in several ways: mixed in with old diet, separate dishes, offered with attractive presentation. Patience is important.
  6. Balancing Nutrients
    • Studies (e.g. Amazon parrots) show that converting from heavy seed diets to diets with higher pellet and produce content helps correct problems like excessive fat and poor calcium and mineral levels.
    • However, even with good diets, selective eating (birds favoring certain foods) can still produce imbalances. It’s not enough just to offer healthy foods; monitoring what portions are actually eaten matters.
  7. Species & Life-Stage Differences
    • Needs vary depending on species (size, metabolism), life-stage (juvenile, adult, breeding, molting), activity level (flight, out-of-cage time), health status. What works for a macaw may be too much or too little for a small parakeet.
    • Consult avian-specific nutritional requirements. Zoo / aviculture nutrition resources (e.g. AZA, academic vet literature) are often better than generic pet advice.

Foraging & Enrichment

  1. Why It Matters
    • In the wild, birds spend large portions of the day foraging, which provides mental stimulation, exercise, and helps maintain natural behaviors. Lack of foraging opportunity in captivity is a major risk factor for behavioral problems (e.g. feather-picking, boredom, depression).
  2. Types of Foraging Enrichment
    • Food puzzles & toys: hiding treats or small amounts of favorite foods in foraging toys encourages manipulation, exploration.
    • Scattering food / using bowls, cups or wrapping items to force “work” to get the food.
    • Providing natural items: branches, leaves, safe woods to peel, chew, etc.
  3. How Much Foraging to Provide
    • Daily opportunities are ideal. Most companion birds benefit from multiple short-foraging tasks per day rather than a single large one.
    • Use lower energy density “food puzzles” (e.g. fibrous veggies, unsweetened produce) more often; high energy treats (nuts, seeds) used sparingly.
  4. Matching Foraging to Species & Individual Preference
    • Different species prefer different manipulatives. As you had: conures enjoy paper and texture; cockatoos are strong manipulators; greys like things that make sound and variation; large macaws need big, tough items to chew. Matching the toy / puzzle to be manageable (but not trivial) is key.
    • Rotate foraging stimuli to keep novelty. Birds get bored of the same toy or puzzle.
  5. Integrating Nutrition & Foraging
    • Foraging can be used to increase consumption of healthy items (pellets, produce). For example, hiding pellets in shredded paper, or wrapping veggies, or mixing produce into food puzzles.
    • Use foraging to reduce selective seed eating: make “seed treats” only inside puzzles or hidden so the bird works for them, rather than having seed mixture always freely available.
